Significant Milestone in Thailand-China Relations
2025 marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Thailand and China, and both nations are preparing to celebrate this important milestone through a series of high-level visits and cultural exchanges. Chinese Ambassador to Thailand, Han Zhiqiang, shared details about the upcoming celebrations in an interview with Nation Group on January 6.
High-Level Visits to Strengthen Bilateral Relations
As part of the anniversary celebrations, Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang will visit Thailand later this year, following a visit by Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to Beijing in February. The Prime Minister’s visit will coincide with the 5th Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) Leaders’ Meeting, which Thailand will host. The exact date for this event has not yet been confirmed.
Cultural and Economic Ties Highlighted in Anniversary Celebrations
In addition to the official visits, cultural representatives from various Chinese provinces will travel to Thailand throughout the year. Over 40,000 Chinese nationals, including students and businesspeople, currently live in Thailand, and many are eager to participate in the anniversary festivities.
Growth in People-to-People Exchanges and Tourism
The bilateral ties between Thailand and China have flourished over the past decade, particularly through increased people-to-people exchanges. In 2019, more than 10 million Chinese tourists visited Thailand, contributing significantly to the Thai tourism industry.
Trade and Investment Cooperation Between Thailand and China
Ambassador Han Zhiqiang also acknowledged the growing trade and investment cooperation between Thailand and China. He noted that the trade relationship has benefited both countries, with Chinese imports primarily comprising raw materials and semi-finished products that support Thai manufacturing.
Special Exhibit: Sacred Buddha Relics Displayed in Thailand
As part of the celebrations, the Chinese government has sent the Sacred Buddha Relic (tooth) from Lingguang Temple in Beijing to Thailand for a special exhibit in Bangkok. The relic will be on display until February 14, 2025, drawing attention to the cultural ties between the two
